This shows the old shipping canal that bypassed the rapids.
The other picture shows the river bed drying up behind one of the cofferdams. After a cofferdam was installed and had a portion of the river sealed off, the sealed off section could be drained like a large swimming pool.
In the early stages after draining, there were pools of water left in the uneven river bottom. Fish were often trapped in these pools and became someone's supper.
