On the left is a gate used in one of the dams. Gates like these move up and down in guides built into the dam walls. Huge cranes hook onto them and position them anywhere from the river bottom to above the surface.
These gates are extremely heavy so they can overcome any resistance the water may offer as they are lowered to the bottom of the river and the flow is cut off.
To the right, we see part of a generator turbine being lowered into the bottom of a generator unit. This is the part that spins the generator as water is allowed to rush in through a tunnel and fall on top of the blades as it passes down river through the dam.
