Cornwall Area - Old Canal & New Dike

Building the power dam required that equipment and materials would somehow have to get across the old Cornwall Canal (which was still in use) to the worksite.

One of first things done in building the Seaway was digging this tunnel under the old canal.

The canal continued to be used all during the building of the Seaway. The dike was constructed to hold back the waters of new lake St. Lawrence. A concrete sluiceway and gates were constructed in the part of the dike where the canal passes through. Here, you can see a ship going through the gate and dike.

This enabled ships to keep using the old canal just prior to flooding. The gates were closed before lake St.Lawrence was filled, and now are part of the dike and hold back a wall of water 50 feet high.
