These locks were quite a technological marvel for their time. Beside each lock was a town because the infrastructure supplied by these facilities allowed for economic expansion and the livelihood for a lot of people.

Lets look at the facilities. The locks and canal along the river were links in a vital transportation system that allowed commerce, growth, and progress to occur.

The locks and canal operation provided jobs for many. Many others operated businesses and supplied goods and services required by the users of the facilities.

The parks around the lock provided recreation and enjoyment to the residents.

A system of sluices, dams, and power houses allowed for stable water levels in the canal and also generated power for the towns and local industries.

The facilities around Lock 23 were similar to those at most other lock locations along the river. They were a hub of economic activity.
